Welcome to a new school year and 6tt grade math! I am looking forward to getting to know your child and the opportunity to meet you.  Please feel free to contact me before or after school, or during my conference periods.  Email is a wonderful way to communicate about simple concerns or questions. I check my email several times a day and will respond as soon as possible.

This year, we will explore and apply sixth grade mathematical knowledge and skills. Here are a few of the concepts we will explore:  mathematical relationships involving rational numbers; proportionality, including ratios, rates, equations and proportions; data analysis & display; probability; geometric relationships and measurement; financial literacy; problem-solving skills and real-world applications.

Classroom Dynamics: Sixth grade math is a blocked class.  Your child will be in math class for two consecutive class periods every day (90 minutes). To achieve the best lessons every day, students should:

  • ·       Be prepared- Pencils, journals, planner, and any assignments due are to be brought to class every day.

  • ·       Be on time- Students should be in their seats, with supplies out and working on the warm-up, when the bell rings.

  • ·       Be positive- Attitude is everything in our classroom. Come in with a positive attitude and it will impact our classroom in a positive way!

  •           Be open-minded – Be open to new ideas and trying new things! Our math class will become a family, and the classroom will be a safe and supportive environment.

Homework: Out of school work is an essential aspect of learning and a small number of problems generally will be assigned every night (Monday -Thursday). Homework assignments for the week will be written by your child in their planner on Monday for the week. You can see what your child will be learning in class as well as outside of class work, by looking at their planner every Monday night.

Grading Policy: Grades are divided into three categories.  Major grades will include summative assessments and projects.  Minor grades will include daily work – warm-ups, graded assignments, in-class activities, etc. Quizzes will be formative assessments, shorter and more frequent than Major grades.

The categories are assigned the following weights:

Major Grades (tests and projects) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40%

Minor Grades. (homework, activities, & quizzes) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  60%

Tutoring: Tutoring is available Monday – Thursday mornings from 8:30 – 9:00. Students can ask questions, finish up an assignment, or re-take quizzes/tests. Students needing help should come to tutoring with attempted work and specific questions.

Late Work: All work should be turned in on time for full credit to be possible. If work is late, the students will lose as least 10 points as day. Students who do not complete homework or projects will receive a “No Homework” stamp, by me, in their planner that will need to be signed by parent and returned the next day for chance of turn in. As per school rules, if a parent does not sign the “No Homework” stamp, an academic demerit is issued to the student.

Positive Reinforcement: Every week, I will choose an outstanding student as the class celebrity of the week. This will be a student that exhibits hard work in the classroom, acts as a leader, and shows respect towards the teacher, peers, and self. As far as a daily classroom reward, I will be passing out yellow tickets. These will be given to students who participate in class, do their homework and assignments on time, come to tutoring, have a great attitude, and make the right choices. Every three weeks, we will draw 3 names from the jar of yellow tickets for a prize!

Technology: Cell phones and other electronic devices are the responsibility of the student. All personal technology, including earbuds, must be turned off and in the students techbag issued by the school by 9:00. If the school supplied techbag is lost, a new one can be purchased in the front office for $5. If the student is not in compliance:

·        1st offense- device will be taken up by the teacher, student will be issued a behavior demerit.  Phone will be returned to the student at the end of the period and parent will be called to make them aware of the disruption.

·        2nd offense- device will be taken up by the teacher, student will be issued a behavior demerit.  Phone will be returned to the student at the end of the period and parent will be called to make them aware of the disruption.

·        3rd offense- device will be collected by the teacher and taken to the assistant principal’s office.  The AP will call home and return the phone to the student at the end of the day. An office referral will be given.
